Collection comprises 483 original watercolours and 26 printed plates of Australian orchids. Most of the watercolours were published in the complete (1969) edition of Nicholls' paintings. The paintings and prints are in 11 folders, as arranged by Nicholls, each mounted on a backing sheet and most accompanied by mss text written by Nicholls.
Presented to the National Herbarium February 1970 by Mr. K. and E. Nicholls in accordance with the will of the late W.H. Nicholls.
The numbering system of the folders and the plates within the folders is idiosyncratic and not necessarily related to the published plate numbers. A spreadsheet with full details of all numbers assigned to the plates (whether mss or published) has been compiled and is stored with the collection.
26 plates are not present as original artworks but as proof sheets. Also present are: 9 unpublished paintings and drawings; text for Prasophyllum ellipticum, Caladenia rigida, and Caladenia hybrid, but without paintings; a bundle of sketches and unfinished drawings in both watercolour and pen & ink . Published plates not present either as original artworks or printed plates are nos. 170, 222 and 429.
