Kristo Johannes Pienaar was born on 4 July 1922 near Rustenburg. He obtained an M.Sc. in Botany from the University of Pretoria and a Ph.D. from the University of Stellenbosch. Taught at the Monument High School from 1944 to 1960, after which he joined the Department of Botany at the University of the Western Cape as senior lecturer, later becoming head of the department)
