The Industrial and Technological Museum of Victoria was established c.1870. In 1945 legislation was passed changing its name to the Museum of Applied Science of Victoria. In January 1961 it became the Institute of Applied Science of Victoria. Between 1971 and 1983 it was known as the Science Museum of Victoria. On 1 July 1983 it merged with the National Museum of Victoria to become the Museum of Victoria. In 1998 it changed its name and corporate identity to Museum Victoria.
